We are thrilled to announce that our alumni, Wong Sau-yue and Fong Siu-chun, have successfully secured entrepreneurship funding with their innovative start-up project, “GDSense”, following their admission to the HKUST Dream Builder Programme and the HKUST × HKSTP Co-ideation Program. The initiative focuses on creating a flexible, cost-effective, and rapid-deployment patrol robot designed specifically for small and medium-sized warehouses. Their outstanding accomplishment showcases the spirit of perseverance, adaptability, and practical problem-solving that defines our students and alumni. The entire school community extends its heartfelt congratulations to them on this remarkable milestone.
Balancing full-time academic studies with the rigorous demands of running a start-up, both alumni navigated countless trials and setbacks to turn an idea into an impactful, real-world solution. They have shared their reflections and heartfelt words of encouragement with our current students:
Wong Sau-yue reflected:
「就好似米Teen精神講嘢咁樣，我哋唔好淨係諗，亦都要真係落手做。當你有諗法嘅時候，願意踏出第一步，喺無數次失敗中不停進步，你總有一日會成功。除咗心態上要咁樣，開發 GDSense 嘅過程，亦令我更加領悟 STEAM 教育嘅價值。編程技巧固然重要，但真正關鍵嘅係 design thinking 同 problem solving skill。我哋要學識嘅，唔係一味拋書包，用盡所有知識去 overkill 個問題，而係用最巧妙嘅方法，用最低成本解決問題。每次我同一位 professor 探討建議嘅時候，佢都會同我講：『殺雞焉用牛刀。』佢用咗一個好簡單嘅水箱故事，話畀我知要靈活變通。故事入面，好多人提到用高科技手段去探測水位，但反而唔記得咗，其實用最簡單嘅繩吊住浮標就可以解決問題。所以，唔好睇小簡單嘅方法。好多時，最好嘅方案唔係最貴、最複雜嗰個，而係最啱用、最直接嗰個。好似 GDSense 咁，我哋冇選擇拆咗個倉庫重新嚟做，而係用一個巡邏機械人，唔使花時間改造倉庫，幫中小企解決問題。STEAM 唔只係為咗考試或比賽，而係訓練我哋面對未知問題時，有能力由零開始搵答案。呢種能力，先係創業同未來社會最需要嘅。」
Fong Siu-chun also encouraged students:
「如果你已經對STEAM依條路有興趣，甚至已經喺度實踐緊嘅話，咁呢段message係留畀你哋嘅。我唔打算又講STEAM有幾好有幾重要。你哋肯花時間落去，已經比好多人清楚。你哋唔係因為人哋話有用先做，而係因為想知、想試、想解決問題。呢樣嘢本身已經好珍貴。我想同你哋講嘅，只係一句『趁後生，有咩想做嘅，試咗先。』唔好等齊人，唔好等有錢，唔好等自己變勁先開始。你係做落去，先會變勁。想整嘅project、想寫嘅程式、想參加嘅比賽、想夾嘅idea，就去做。中學乃至大學呢幾年，係你輸得起、錯得起、畀得起時間去好奇嘅時候。就算最後整唔成，你都已經識多咗、見多咗、諗多咗。李sir成日講：『唔好掛住讀死書，要多d應用和創新。』依句嘢唔係叫你哋唔讀書，而係唔好停留喺背答案、操卷、等標準答案。將學到嘅嘢用出嚟，先真正屬於你。創新唔一定係發明驚天動地嘅嘢，可能只係將一個麻煩位改好少少，將一個舊idea用新方法做一次。只要你肯問『點解一定要咁？』、『可唔可以更好？』，你就已經喺度創新。你哋而家做嘅嘢，可能無人明、無獎、無分數，但唔緊要。第日你回頭，會發現呢啲先係你嘅底氣。將來世界點變，你都有能力學、有能力做、有能力諗出新路。所以，繼續做啦，有咩想搞，就搞咗先。錯咗，就去改；唔識，就去學；冇人陪，自己開個頭，自然會遇到同路人。Stay curious, keep learning, keep growing。」
